Mad Science Birthday Party!

Here is my son's Mad Science birthday party (2010). I hope some of these ideas help if you decide to have one. I didn't have much time or money this year and everything was bought after Halloween or at the Dollar Tree or someone gave to me or I borrowed (black light, 3D glasses). If you have a bigger budget I would recommend having Mad Science come to the party to do experiments and they also bring goody bags.

Invitations: I found online from another mom that created her own. She had some great ideas too.
Mad Science Invitations

Lab Coats
Activity: I got men's V-neck T-shirt (5pk Fruit of the Loom or Hanes). When the kids showed up I had them decorate and put a funny name on the name tag. I bought the huge pack of colored Sharpie pens and used paper bags to put in the shirt so the ink wouldn't leak through. Also, I had a bunch of 3D glasses and popped the lenses out for them to wear too.

Cup Cakes
I used Neon food coloring and m&ms for the top.

Gummy Worms in Ice Cubes

Eyeball Drink Stirrers
These were at Wal-Mart from Halloween. You could probably use regular lolly pops if you can't find these.

The Science Lab
I chose a room that wasn't that big (which is our dining area). I bought a roll of (18) 55 gallon bags at Wal-Mart for about $10. Cut them open to make a sheet. I did long ways for the highest point from my ceiling and the door ways. I would recommend opening the windows and cutting slits or little holes to let air through. It will get hot in there, especially with the black lights.

You can eat just about everything on this table. There are just a couple of beakers (cylinder vases from Dollar Tree) that have Atomic Glow from SteveSpanglerScience.com Everything else I got from Wal-Mart after Halloween. It's all gummy or marshmallow.

Same table with the black light and the dry ice. The camera doesn't like the black light.

I put body part gummies in the punch bowl. Which was Raspberry Sherbert with 7-up. It will give it a little foam on the top. I put dry ice in it, but don't recommend it. It doesn't do much and it freezes the gummies. Also, you can't see it and you don't want to consume it or drink it with a piece in your cup.

Activity: I used colored marshmallows with toothpicks for them to make a structure. You could have the one who creates the tallest win a prize.

Activity: Dry Ice Bubble
We used a glass bowl, put the Atomic Glow and dry ice in the bowl. Have a separate small bowl with dish soap and a show string and then slowly drag the soapy string across the bowl to create a bubble and the dry ice will do the rest. Don't put dish soap in the bowl with the dry ice (maybe at the end) it won't work as well and it just bubbles.

Activity: Making Atomic Slime
I got this from stevespanglerscience.com too. It comes with these cups and lids and all you have to do is put the ingredients in and they shake it. This also comes with a little LED black light that makes it glow. Really cool, but didn't get a picture. :(
